Motorcyclists Ride for Police | Pueblo Motorcycle Crash Lawyer

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

The 13th annual Blue Thunder Motorcycle Run, honoring the memories of fallen police officers, was held along the front range, according to CBS Denver. The run, which began in honor of Douglas County Deputy Ron King, who was killed in the line of duty in 1999, raised money for Englewood Police officer Jeremy Bitner, who died after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while engaged in a traffic stop in May. Each year, dozens of motorcyclists, many of them law enforcement officers themselves, ride along the front range in an effort to raise money for the families of lost officers, and to increase awareness of the dangers police officers face every day, particularly motorcycle patrol officers. One of the goals of the ride is to attract more riders each year; over 100 participated this year.

Have you lost a loved one in a motorcycle crash? Contact a dedicated Pueblo motorcycle crash lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your options.

Pueblo Motorcycle Accident Attorney Motorcycle accidents can leave catastrophic injuries. If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, contact a dedicated Pueblo motorcycle accident attorney today to discuss your options.

Over 4,500 motorcyclists are killed in traffic accidents every year, based on data reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Motorcycles represent a disproportionately high percentage of traffic fatalities when compared to total vehicle miles driven, which is due to a combination of factors. Certainly, there is no question that when riding a motorcycle, one is both less visible in traffic than a larger car or truck, and more vulnerable to serious injury or death in the event of a crash. It is extremely important for motorcyclists to be aware of their surroundings at all times, but also for drivers of cars and trucks to keep an eye out for smaller vehicles such as motorcycles and bicycles at all times.

If you have lost a loved one in a motorcycle crash, contact a compassionate, dedicated Pueblo motorcycle crash lawyer immediately to discuss your options. Mickey Smith has helped countless people in Pueblo and the surrounding area to recover compensation for medical bills, property damage and loss of wages after serious injury accidents, including fatal crashes. When you have lost a family member, no one can return what you have lost, but if your loved one was taken away from you by another person’s recklessness or negligence, Mickey can help ensure that person takes responsibility for his or her actions. Someone else’s negligence should never cause you financial hardship on top of your grief. For more information and a FREE CASE EVALUATION contact Mickey today at (719)544-0062.

Keep Safe on the 4th | Pueblo Child Injury Accident Lawyer

Keeping Your 4th of July Celebration a Safe One

Independence Day is one of our nation’s most celebrated holidays and a popular time for family get-togethers or a night out with friends. But as the holiday quickly approaches, it is important to keep the safety of your family and friends in mind.

In one way or another, nearly everyone celebrates the 4th of July with fireworks. We either light some off ourselves, or head over and watch one of the many local municipal fireworks shows. But as a reminder, not all cities, counties, and states allow the possession of the same kinds of fire works. If you are not sure what bans, if any, for fireworks are enforced in your neighborhood, check with your local police department website. The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office has placed a ban on fireworks this year.

Fireworks and Injuries

According to a study conducted by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) in 2011, approximately 9,600 people were treated at emergency rooms for fireworks injuries. More than half of those injuries were burns, and nearly half of the injuries were injuries to the hands and fingers. The majority of injuries to other body parts were to the eyes, head, or face. The eyes were the only part of the body where lacerations, contusions and foreign bodies were more common injuries than burns. Most people treated at the emergency room were released without being admitted to the hospital.

Injuries to Children

Of course, there are things you can do to ensure the safety of your family. An analysis of the ages of fireworks injury victims shows that about 16% of all fireworks injuries are to children under the age of ten. The fact that sparklers cause more injuries than any other type of firework probably goes hand in hand with this statistic. Something to remember is that, even if you don’t give your children fireworks, children are curious, so you need to watch them around fireworks, and also watch the fireworks and matches or lighters to be sure that your children aren’t getting into them out of curiosity.

The CPSC related one other very disturbing trend for the 4th of July holiday. They report a spike in child pool drownings during the week surrounding the 4th with over 20 drownings, but also several thousand emergency room visits after near-drownings. As important as it is to monitor your children around fireworks, please don’t forget, if you have a pool, to be sure that a responsible, sober adult is monitoring the pool at all times. The fact is, it only takes a moment for a small child to have a terrible, tragic accident.

If You are Injured by the Reckless Use of Fireworks by Another Person, You May Have Legal Recourse.

If you are burned, a family member is injured, or your property is destroyed by the reckless use of fireworks by another person, you may have legal options. You should not be forced to pay for your damages due to someone else refusing to celebrate the 4th of July safely. The experienced, dedicated Pueblo Child Injury Accident Lawyers at the Pueblo Personal Injury Law Office of Mickey W. Smith wish you a very happy and joyful 4th of July holiday, and also remind you to please be conscious of your own safety, as well as the safety of any children with whom you are celebrating. Over 50% of Teens Text and Drive | Pueblo Distracted Driving Accident Attorney

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Texting and distracted driving statistics

(This graphic used with permission from
Lakewood Ranch car accident attorney Jim Dodson.)

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that according to a survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than half of all high school seniors admit to texting or emailing while driving. Amanda Lenhart of the Pew Research Center believes that these results are not surprising and indicates that texting is the most common way that many teens communicate with their peers. The survey did not ask about whether texting is done while the vehicle is in motion or stopped, at traffic lights for example, but the numbers still seem to reveal a rather unsettling trend in unsafe driving habits among teenagers.

Have you been seriously injured in a distracted driving accident? Speak with a dedicated Pueblo distracted driving accident attorney to discuss your options.

Distraction.gov, an official government website for distracted driving, reports that over 3,000 people were killed in crashes involving distracted driving in 2010, with over 400,000 more injured. Elk Causes Rollover | Pueblo Car Crash Attorney

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

According to The Chieftain, a single-vehicle rollover accident sent a mother and her daughter to the hospital. The woman, who lives in Lakewood, was driving just south of Pueblo when she swerved to avoid an elk in the road, and ended up rolling her Jeep Liberty. The woman’s one-year-old daughter, who was thrown from the vehicle, was transported to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. The driver was taken to St. Anthony’s in Denver. A third passenger was taken to a hospital in Alamosa, but was released. The Colorado State Patrol does not believe that alcohol, drugs, or speeding were factors in the crash, but are looking into whether the child was securely restrained in a child safety seat.

Have you or a loved one been injured in a car crash? Speak with an experienced Pueblo car crash attorney immediately to discuss your options.

Not every car crash happens because a driver acted carelessly or negligently. Sometimes, things just happen: wildlife in the road, extreme weather conditions, and emergency situations are issues that no one can control. However, in many cases, car crashes are the result of one (or more) driver either acting in a way that a reasonable person wouldn’t, or failing to act in a way that a reasonable person would. This is what is meant by negligence. When another driver’s negligence causes serious injury, you can be compensated for the cost of that injury.

If you have been seriously injured by another driver’s negligence, speak with an experienced Pueblo car crash attorney as soon as possible to discuss your options. There can be a lot of complicated factors involved, and some insurance companies will try to maximize profits by avoiding payment of legitimate claims. Mickey Smith has helped countless people who have been victims of car crashes to recover the compensation they needed to get back to normal life. His thorough understanding of the law, as well as the processes of investigation and insurance can help you. For more information and a FREE CONSULTATION, contact Mickey at (719)544-0062 today.

DUI Consequences In Colorado

(This graphic used with permission from
Greeley DUI Attorneys Grant, Hoffman & Kamada, PC.)

A tragic car crash that took the lives of three young people in Pueblo may have been related to drinking and driving, according to the Pueblo Chieftain. A pick-up truck driven by a man who police believe was drunk ran a red light at high speed, and hit a compact car, killing three teenage girls inside. The driver of the pick-up was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and then booked into jail on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. This tragic accident is all the more tragic because it could so easily have been avoided.

One of the best known organizations for educating people about the dangers of drunk driving is Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). According to statistics reported on their website, someone in the United States will be killed by a drunk driver every 50 minutes on average. Someone will be injured in an alcohol-related crash every minute. Furthermore, MADD cites a statistic that between half and three fourths of people convicted of drunk driving will continue to drive on their suspended license. In many cases, the drunk driver who kills innocent people may go to jail, but that jail-time doesn’t help the devastation left behind to the families of the victims.

Losing a loved one is always a terrible and difficult thing, but when someone is taken away from you in a drunk driving accident, the suddenness of the loss often serves to compound and intensify the grief. While no one can bring back your loved one, an experienced Pueblo wrongful death attorney can help manage loss of income and companionship. Family Awarded $260,000 In Wrongful Death Sentence | Wrongful Death Lawyer

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

According to the Gazette, a former Harvard graduate student from Colorado Springs, has been ordered to pay a $260,000 civil judgement after being convicted of manslaughter in 2003 for fatally stabbing a Cambridge man. His conviction was later overturned and he reached a deal to serve two years in prison after his second trial ended in a hung jury. He was found negligent in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of the victim and ordered to pay $520,000, a judgement later reduced to $260,000.

Have you or someone you know suffered a tragic loss due to the negligence of another? Contact a wrongful death law firm as soon as possible to discuss your options.

Civil actions are very different from criminal charges. In a criminal case, the victim of the crime cannot receive financial compensation from the defendant if the defendant is found guilty. In a civil case, the victim may pursue a separate action against the defendant for financial compensation. In a case such as this, a family who has suffered a tragic loss may choose to pursue compensation to ensure financial security for a child or spouse left behind.

Red Light Cameras Appear to be Beneficial | Pueblo Vehicle Accident Attorney

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

According to The Pueblo Chieftain, the presence of red light cameras have reduced the number of traffic collisions at two major Pueblo intersections. Both intersections of Thatcher and Prairie and of U.S. 50 at Norwood Avenue have seen a dramatic drop in side impact collisions since the installment of red light automatic cameras in 2009. The city traffic engineer has stated that broadside collisions have dropped from around 26 percent to about 5 percent and has consequently made these intersections safer for drivers. Even though these red light cameras appear to be beneficial in these cases, many complaints throughout other local cities claim the cameras are intrusive and have little impact on general safety.

Despite the family’s claim, the deputy coroner has issued a release of the toxicology tests that shows Aldirch had been intoxicated at the time of his death. Further investigation is pending in the case.
