In fatal crashes, 75% of passenger car occupants who were totally ejected from the vehicle were killed. The majority of those totally ejected from a vehicle died due to injuries sustained from being ejected. Among passengers over 4-years-old, safety belts saved an estimated 11,889 lives in 2000. There were more than 5.4 million police-reported motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2010. Twenty-eight percent of those crashes resulted in a life changing injury, and fewer than 1% resulted in a death. In 2010 nearly 60% of fatal crashes involved only one vehicle. A total of 32,885 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes in 2010, and another 2 million people were injured. Car accidents are one of the most common ways to die in the United States. Police agencies are always encouraging seat-belt use and that drivers to heed to speed limit signs. Speeding is the most common reason for drivers between 24 and 30 to die in a car accident. As reported recently in the Pueblo Chieftain, a 15-year-old Vilas girl was killed in a car accident in Baca County on April 9th, 2011. The single-vehicle crash ejected the girl, who died later at Swedish Hospital in Denver; the 17-year-old male driver was uninjured.

The car crash, in which excessive speed was said to be a factor, occurred on Baca County Road M about 7 miles east of U.S. 287, when the vehicle left the road and rolled over into a field. The accident started a 2000-acre wildfire northeast of Campo, which was later contained. Authorities indicated that charges are pending against the teen driver, including a citation for speeding.

According to accident statistics compiled by the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), during 2008, the latest year for which accurate crash data are available, excessive speed was a factor in approximately 20% of the more than 27,000 vehicle accidents statewide that year. Tips for Teen Drivers – Pueblo Personal Injury Attorney

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

According to an article posted by New First 5, more teens die in Colorado from car crashes than any other cause. In 2009, 38 Colorado teens lost their lives in automobile accidents. The Colorado State Patrol (CPS) wants to save as many teens as possible. The State Patrol encourages “parents to have their teens attend the Alive at 25 training or a driver safety course to help them be more knowledgeable about laws and the impact that poor driving choices will have on them.” The CPS offers the falling tips for teen drivers:

  1. Always wear your seatbelt
  2. Observe and obey posted speed limits
  3. Lower speed according to road conditions
  4. Never drink and drive
  5. Avoid distractions (cell phones, IPODs, radios) and pay attention to the road
  6. Know and observe the graduated driver’s license (GDL) laws

The CPS offers the falling tips for parents of teen drivers:

  1. Educate yourself about GDL laws
  2. Have your teen attend a driver safety course (Alive at 25)
  3. Be a good driving example
  4. Emphasize the importance of making great driving choices
  5. Let your teen know you care about them and want to be their partner in the safe driving process

Trucker Pleads Guilty in Fatal Crash – Pueblo Personal Injury Attorney

Friday, September 24th, 2010

A trucker from Texas has pleaded guilty in causing the deaths of two women during a 2009 snow storm. According to 7News, Richard Widmier pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide on Wednesday in state court. Widmier was driving his tractor trailer eastbound on I-70 when it slammed into the back of a Jeep Liberty killing both women inside almost instantly. Investigators said that the Jeep was traveling in the far right lane at about 15 miles an hour due to white out conditions. Witness statements and accident reconstruction indicated that the tractor trailer was traveling between 56 and 63 miles an hour at the time of the collision.

When a large truck and a passenger vehicle collide, the results can be devastating. According to the “Large Truck Crash Causation” study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, when a passenger vehicle is in an accident with a tractor trailer, semi truck or an 18 wheel truck, the smaller vehicle’s passengers are more likely to be seriously injured or killed than those in the truck. The study reviewed 120,000 large truck accidents that occurred from April 2001 to December 2003. The study involved 241,000 total vehicles where injuries directly resulted from the accident finding that 44,097 crashes resulted in incapacitating injuries.

4 Years in Prison for DUI Crash that Injured an Officer – Pueblo Personal Injury Attorney

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

A Colorado Springs man will spend the next 4 years of his life in prison for his role in a DUI crash the injured police officer, Sgt. Philip LeBeau. LeBeau, who specializes in DUI enforcement, “was catapulted 45 feet off his motorcycle” when Raymound Laracuente, 27, struck the officer while driving drunk. According to a report by 9 News, Laracuente’s “blood-alcohol content was measured at .112 after the crash,” and he had a prior conviction for driving under the influence. LeBeau’s family members wept as they described the impact the injury has had their lives.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, an “alcohol-related fatality in Colorado costs $3.6 million: $1.1 million in monetary costs and $2.5 million in quality of life losses.” When it is all said and done, automobile accidents “involving alcohol set the state back an astounding $1.9 billion a year.” To be sure, money is not the only way, or even the best way, to count the costs of the loss of a life. However, it does paint a bigger picture of what these accidents cost not only the family who loses a loved one but the larger community as well.

Luckily, the police officer in the above case did not lose his life. He did, however, sustain life changing injuries. If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident involving someone who was driving under the influence of alcohol, you need to speak to a Pueblo personal injury attorney about your legal options.
