The driver of a trash truck has been cited by Pueblo police for “careless driving causing bodily injury” after the driver pulled out in front of a motorcycle causing the motorcycle to collide into the truck. According to The Pueblo Chieftain, the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Parkview Medical Center “suffering serious bodily injury and a broken jaw.”
The article mentioned above was quick to point out that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 96,000 people were injured in motorcycle accidents in the US in 2008. Many of these injuries involved serious head and brain injuries, which were the result of riders failing to wear helmets. Head and brain injuries can leave a person with months of recovery and sometimes a lifetime’s worth of side effects. It is important for riders to realize the dangers of riding without a helmet and to take proper precautions whenever going for a ride.
