Texting and distracted driving statistics

Lakewood Ranch car accident attorney Jim Dodson.)

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that according to a survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than half of all high school seniors admit to texting or emailing while driving. Amanda Lenhart of the Pew Research Center believes that these results are not surprising and indicates that texting is the most common way that many teens communicate with their peers. The survey did not ask about whether texting is done while the vehicle is in motion or stopped, at traffic lights for example, but the numbers still seem to reveal a rather unsettling trend in unsafe driving habits among teenagers.

Elk Causes Rollover | Pueblo Car Crash Attorney

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

According to The Chieftain, a single-vehicle rollover accident sent a mother and her daughter to the hospital. The woman, who lives in Lakewood, was driving just south of Pueblo when she swerved to avoid an elk in the road, and ended up rolling her Jeep Liberty. The woman’s one-year-old daughter, who was thrown from the vehicle, was transported to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. The driver was taken to St. Anthony’s in Denver. A third passenger was taken to a hospital in Alamosa, but was released. The Colorado State Patrol does not believe that alcohol, drugs, or speeding were factors in the crash, but are looking into whether the child was securely restrained in a child safety seat.

Have you or a loved one been injured in a car crash? Speak with an experienced Pueblo car crash attorney immediately to discuss your options.

Not every car crash happens because a driver acted carelessly or negligently. Sometimes, things just happen: wildlife in the road, extreme weather conditions, and emergency situations are issues that no one can control. However, in many cases, car crashes are the result of one (or more) driver either acting in a way that a reasonable person wouldn’t, or failing to act in a way that a reasonable person would. This is what is meant by negligence. When another driver’s negligence causes serious injury, you can be compensated for the cost of that injury.

If you have been seriously injured by another driver’s negligence, speak with an experienced Pueblo car crash attorney as soon as possible to discuss your options. There can be a lot of complicated factors involved, and some insurance companies will try to maximize profits by avoiding payment of legitimate claims. Mickey Smith has helped countless people who have been victims of car crashes to recover the compensation they needed to get back to normal life. His thorough understanding of the law, as well as the processes of investigation and insurance can help you. For more information and a FREE CONSULTATION, contact Mickey at (719)544-0062 today.

DUI Consequences In Colorado

(This graphic used with permission from
Greeley DUI Attorneys Grant, Hoffman & Kamada, PC.)

A tragic car crash that took the lives of three young people in Pueblo may have been related to drinking and driving, according to the Pueblo Chieftain. A pick-up truck driven by a man who police believe was drunk ran a red light at high speed, and hit a compact car, killing three teenage girls inside. The driver of the pick-up was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and then booked into jail on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. This tragic accident is all the more tragic because it could so easily have been avoided.

One of the best known organizations for educating people about the dangers of drunk driving is Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). According to statistics reported on their website, someone in the United States will be killed by a drunk driver every 50 minutes on average. Someone will be injured in an alcohol-related crash every minute. Furthermore, MADD cites a statistic that between half and three fourths of people convicted of drunk driving will continue to drive on their suspended license. In many cases, the drunk driver who kills innocent people may go to jail, but that jail-time doesn’t help the devastation left behind to the families of the victims.

Losing a loved one is always a terrible and difficult thing, but when someone is taken away from you in a drunk driving accident, the suddenness of the loss often serves to compound and intensify the grief. While no one can bring back your loved one, an experienced Pueblo wrongful death attorney can help manage loss of income and companionship. Mickey Smith is a compassionate attorney who has experience helping the families of victims of wrongful death. Red Light Cameras Appear to be Beneficial | Pueblo Vehicle Accident Attorney

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

According to The Pueblo Chieftain, the presence of red light cameras have reduced the number of traffic collisions at two major Pueblo intersections. Both intersections of Thatcher and Prairie and of U.S. 50 at Norwood Avenue have seen a dramatic drop in side impact collisions since the installment of red light automatic cameras in 2009. The city traffic engineer has stated that broadside collisions have dropped from around 26 percent to about 5 percent and has consequently made these intersections safer for drivers. Even though these red light cameras appear to be beneficial in these cases, many complaints throughout other local cities claim the cameras are intrusive and have little impact on general safety.
