Motorcyclists Ride for Police | Pueblo Motorcycle Crash Lawyer

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

The 13th annual Blue Thunder Motorcycle Run, honoring the memories of fallen police officers, was held along the front range, according to CBS Denver. The run, which began in honor of Douglas County Deputy Ron King, who was killed in the line of duty in 1999, raised money for Englewood Police officer Jeremy Bitner, who died after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while engaged in a traffic stop in May. Each year, dozens of motorcyclists, many of them law enforcement officers themselves, ride along the front range in an effort to raise money for the families of lost officers, and to increase awareness of the dangers police officers face every day, particularly motorcycle patrol officers. One of the goals of the ride is to attract more riders each year; over 100 participated this year.

Over 4,500 motorcyclists are killed in traffic accidents every year, based on data reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Motorcycles represent a disproportionately high percentage of traffic fatalities when compared to total vehicle miles driven, which is due to a combination of factors. Certainly, there is no question that when riding a motorcycle, one is both less visible in traffic than a larger car or truck, and more vulnerable to serious injury or death in the event of a crash. It is extremely important for motorcyclists to be aware of their surroundings at all times, but also for drivers of cars and trucks to keep an eye out for smaller vehicles such as motorcycles and bicycles at all times.
