The dangers of a rollover accident may be immediately apparent to most people however it is worth learning more about to prevent it from ever happening to you. Rollover accidents occur more frequently with large trucks or light trucks than any other vehicle type. However, it is important to understand a rollover accident can happen to anyone for a number of reasons. A rollover accident is defined as a rollover if the vehicles 4 wheels leave the ground and any side or end of the car hits the ground.
There are a few types of roll-overs.
- A tripping rollover is when a vehicle is sliding sideways, and the tires strike a curb, dig into soft ground, suddenly causing a sudden lateral force that causes the car to tilt on its side.
- Depending on your speed a car can roll completely over or just land on its side.
- When a narrow object causes one side of the vehicle to accelerate upwards, but not the other, causing the vehicle to rotate along its long axis resulting in a tipping action by the car.
- A car collision that involves a side impact can accelerate a vehicle sideways.
- As a vehicle crosses a ditch or steep slope.
- When hitting a large obstacle with one of its wheels or when maneuvering over uneven terrain.
It is always important to check your vehicle for roll-over warnings and concentrate on your speed when navigating turns, curbs, or even ditches. Speed of a vehicle is a big factor for reasons cars roll-over.

According to The Pueblo Chieftain, the presence of red light cameras have reduced the number of traffic collisions at two major Pueblo intersections. Both intersections of Thatcher and Prairie and of U.S. 50 at Norwood Avenue have seen a dramatic drop in side impact collisions since the installment of red light automatic cameras in 2009. The city traffic engineer has stated that broadside collisions have dropped from around 26 percent to about 5 percent and has consequently made these intersections safer for drivers. Even though these red light cameras appear to be beneficial in these cases, many complaints throughout other local cities claim the cameras are intrusive and have little impact on general safety.

According to 9 News, the family of a Colorado man is accusing the state of not properly maintaining a bridge that gave way when the man fell and died. The body of George Aldrich Jr. was found under the bridge after a two-week search in Aspen, Colorado. Maroon Creek Bridge is old and had a badly damaged fence around it that was not repaired according to the parents of Aldrich. The family is now suing the Colorado Department of Transportation for failing to properly repair the old bridge and putting the public’s safety at risk. Despite the family’s claim, the deputy coroner has issued a release of the toxicology tests that shows Aldirch had been intoxicated at the time of his death. Further investigation is pending in the case. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that the toy company, Henry Gordy International, Inc. of Plainfield, N.J, has agreed to a settlement in a failure to report a product safety defect case concerning one of their toys. A toy gun known as the Auto Fire Target Set, included the plastic gun, plastic darts, and a small target. It was determined by the CPSC that the small plastic darts were a serious choking hazard for children. Even more disturbing, however, it was also determined that the Henry Gordy company knew of this potentially deadly risk and failed to report the issue or recall the product. Three deaths had been associated with the toy and the CPSC instantly took action. Henry Gordy agreed to pay the penalty of $1,100,000 but declined ultimate responsibility. Total recall of the product has been issued nationwide.

The Colorado State Patrol (CPS) wants to save as many teens as possible. - Always wear your seatbelt
- Observe and obey posted speed limits
- Lower speed according to road conditions
- Never drink and drive
- Avoid distractions (cell phones, IPODs, radios) and pay attention to the road
- Know and observe the graduated driver’s license (GDL) laws

- Educate yourself about GDL laws
- Have your teen attend a driver safety course (Alive at 25)
- Be a good driving example

When a large truck and a passenger vehicle collide, the results can be devastating. According to the “Large Truck Crash Causation” study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, when a passenger vehicle is in an accident with a tractor trailer, semi truck or an 18 wheel truck, the smaller vehicle’s passengers are more likely to be seriously injured or killed than those in the truck. The study reviewed 120,000 large truck accidents that occurred from April 2001 to December 2003. The study involved 241,000 total vehicles where injuries directly resulted from the accident finding that 44,097 crashes resulted in incapacitating injuries.
